Makarska

Description

Historically Makarska is one of the oldest cities on eastern Adriatic coast. Oldest archeological finds date back to 6st century BC. First settlement was founded 2500 years BC as a Fenincian's colony, who were interested in snails locally called 'Grizar', which is used to create high quality color. Romans named it Muccurum, the peak of Muccurum was in 7th century, when the diocese was formed. In 15th century Makarska is under the rule of Ottoman Empire, cultural growth happened only after Venecina Republic took control of it in 17th century. Makarska was under rule of French from 1806. to 1813. , Austian Empire from 1813. to 1928., from 1995 is part of Croatia.
Today Makarska is quite a tourist town, where a big part of tourists come from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
