Description
Omiš has been the most well known pirate center of this part of Europe, and the pirates of Omiš were well known all around the Adriatic, and also have been talked about in the Mediteranean sea. In the 14th and 15th century, when the naval trade was peaking, pirates of the Omiš area were at their highest also. The ships passing through Republic of Venice, Dubrovnik state and the city of Split were full of goods and were easy targets all until landlords of the area didn't sell the city and the area to the republic of Venice , together with that part of Dalmatia. The pirates have become businessmen, salesmen, sailors and traders. After the fall of Venice, the city became a part of the Austrian Empire (1805), followed by the rule of Jugoslavija and then, after 1991 a part of the Republic of Croatia.
Historical core of the city is situated in the foothills of the mountain Dinara, in the delta of the river Cetina, that steeply drops through the Cetina canyon into the delta and to the sea. Today the city of Omiš is well known as a tourist destination and 20 kilometers of the pittoresque road that is heading towards Makarska. The two towers, Fortica and Mirabela , were built to have a view toward the islands of Brač, Šolta and Hvar, and to be able to observe the pirates arriving from the distance and to be able to prepare for the events such as pirate invasion from the sea.
One of the attractions is the rafting on the river Cetina, in its canyon, which is visited by many every year.
Every year there is a manifestation that has become a tradition for the last hundred or more years.
