Successes of Split sport

Description

Split, the city of champions, a special sports story in the world.. Split is said to be the top sports city in the world because no other city in the world with so many residents (180000) has as many World and European champions and Olympic champions, in collective and individual sports.
A specific story is the love of the residents of Split and Dalmatia towards sports. Children have a strong admiration for sports from an early age instilled in them and most children start playing sports from a very early age, and there is great talent present in this region, so it is no wonder that the city of Split has so many champions. Football, basketball, water polo, handball, volleyball, rugby, tennis, swimming, rowing and martial arts are sports that dominate but still the greatest love is the Football Club Hajduk and such love for a club can be seen and felt in only a few cities in the world. It's the kind of love that borders with insanity and the worse the club does, the more the people love and support it.

However, in the history of Split sport, the greatest success was achieved by the Basketball Club Jugoplastika and in the period from 1989-1991. They were 3 times European champions and were named the best team in Europe in the 20th century. An incredibly young team led by Toni Kukoc and Dino Rađa played basketball that is still to today not conquered after 20 years.

Goran Ivanišević, the 2001 Wimbledon champion, made his mark on world tennis and experienced an ovation of over 50,000 people on the waterfront that greeted him upon his return.
Water polo is also an interesting story because there are 3 clubs in Split that have won the greatest successes throughout their history.
VK Jadran 2 times champion of Europe (1991 and 1992), VK Pošk-Slobodna Dalmacija champion of Europe 2000 and VK Mornar winner of the Cup Winner's Cup back in 1987.
A large number of water polo players are Olympic medalists and world and European champions and of this group of top players, Milivoj Bebic was named the best player in the world 3 times in 1982, 1983 and 1985.
Handball artist Ivano Balić, on the other hand, was named the best handball player in the world in 2003 and 2006.
All clubs from all the listed sports have given the city of Split champions throughout history several times and the only unfulfilled wish of the people of Split is for the football club Hajduk to be the champion of Europe.
