Preserved from ancient times, Zadar is today a cultural monument full of sights. In the 1st century BC Zadar was a Roman colony. In the 9th century Zadar was mentioned as the seat of Bishop Donat and at that time the church of the Holy Trinity was built, today the church of St. Donatus, the patron saint of the city of Zadar. In the 10th century there was a mass settlement of Croats and at that time Zadar became a Croatian city. In the 13th century the Venetians set fire to Zadar and since then Zadar has been under the rule of Venice, and in the 18th century with the fall of Venice it came under the rule of Austria and at that time Zadar gained the status of the capital of the Kingdom of Dalmatia. At the beginning of the 20th century, Zadar came under the rule of Italy and in 1945 as part of Yugoslavia, and since 1991 it has become an integral part of the Republic of Croatia. Today, Zadar has a reputation in the world as an old city on the sea with preserved culture and sights from history.
