Archeological researches say that in the place where Dubrovnik is today the first settlement was created in the 6th century and rapidly expanded with the arrival of Croats in the 7th century. Crusades in the 12th and 13th centuries created a maritime trade center in that part of the Adriatic sea, due to good geographical positioning. In the 15th century Dubrovnik became the main trade center on the Adriatic sea, mostly thanks to influence from the Republic Of Venice.

In the 16th century Dubrovnik developed continental trade routes throughout today Balkan, which was under Ottoman empire at the time. Dubrovnik excelled at diplomacy and trading which led it to be one of few countries with no military and allowed them to do trades in the whole Ottoman empire with only 2% tax. The golden age of Dubrovnik started with the downfall of the Republic of Venice, they started developing their own sea trade routes and building of state of the art trading ships, which led Dubrovnik to become the greatest naval force in the whole Mediteranian sea and Black sea, they were so well known that their services were ask for transports to India and America.

The feeling of freedom, security and wealth was reflected in the cultural path in literature and science and other forms of culture and Dubrovnik became a famous world city of culture and experienced its artistic flourishing in the 17th century.
In the 18th century Dubrovnik became part of Dalmatia and Croatia and shares its history and future with it.

In 1991, Dubrovnik suffered great damage and has recovered to this day, under the watchful eye of UNESCO because Dubrovnik has been declared part of the tangible and intangible heritage. Today, Dubrovnik is the most popular city in Croatia, even people who do not know where Croatia is, usually know where Dubrovnik is, and would like to visit it if they have not already or return if they have.
