Description
For the last 100 years, one of the tourist attractions and one of the most beautiful islands of the southern Adriatic sea, known also as the 'Sunny Island', is the island Hvar. It is surrounded with sixteen of the smaller islands that are called 'Pakleni otoci', that translates to 'Hell Islands', and in the last century has become one of the most wanted tourist destination.
The island of Hvar with an old history of 4 centuries BC, first inhabited 350 years BC, has been an important strategic center throughout its history.
The first written documents of the island of Hvar come from 385-384 BC when the Greeks founded the first colony called Pharos, on the site of today's old town.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the authorities were constantly changing and in the 11th century Hvar was under Croatian rule, and from the 14th century under the rule of the Venetian Republic. Hvar at that time was a large economic trade center where the Turks occupied Hvar in 1571 and at that time Hvar was the richest island trade center in the southern part of Europe. In the 18th century under the rule of Austria, to come under the rule of Yugoslavia in the 19th century, and since 1991 as part of the Republic of Croatia.
Today, Hvar with several small places that each have their own story, today offer guests in terms of tourism beautiful bays and beaches, peace and relaxation, but also fun and sightseeing part of history, is a welcome island for a long time of year.
