Description
Island of Vis, located at outer edge of Craoatian territorial sea, has rich fields and vast variety of fish has attracted it first residences all the way back in stone age, the isolation has formed special culture there, and today any official word that are connected to fishing, small boats, and equipment directly used for it, came from island of Vis, since those words have not been influenced by other nations or dialects. 2nd century BC Vis is populated by tribes of Illyrians, 4th century BC Greeks colonize Vis and islands nearby. Vis, renamed Issa, became part of Roman Empire in the time of Gaius Julius Caesar. Remains of Romans and Greeks are present to this day, as city walls, theater and thermal baths. In 1483 AD Vis came under the rule of Venice, and locally under Croatian diocese. From 1805 AD to 1815 AD Vis was under rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, Austrian Empire controlled Vis from 1815 AD to 1866 AD, during this period Croats defend Vis, under the banner of Austian Empire, from Italians, which led to big Vis's battle in which Croatians were victorious.
Vis has experienced steady development of society and culture until in 1918 AD it came under the rule of Italy. In 1943 AD Yugoslavia took control of Vis and turned it into a military base, which led to stagnation of growth and development. In 1991 AD Vis became part of Croatia, which led to fast growth in tourism and development. Parts of Island, one part of the military base, today are presented as one of the biggest tourist attractions of Vis. Today Vis is turned to tourism, fishing, olive groves, vineyards, it is also one of the most peaceful and had one of the most untouched parts of nature in the whole Adriatic sea.
