Description

Šolta, the sunniest island in Dalmatia ...
Šolta, like all the islands around Split, has a history from the 4th century BC, from the time of the Illyrians who were the first inhabitants of Šolta, named after Figs, and fig, olive and geographical position are trademarks of the island of Šolta. Christianity on Šolta began to spread in the 4th century, as evidenced by the remains and basilicas of the church of St. Stephen.
When the Avars ravaged Salona in 614, the population fled the salon on Šolta, which is the closest island to Split. Due to its geographical position, Šolta was often targeted by pirates in the past, and the biggest robbery in history took place in 1240, when Omis pirates looted the whole of Šolta and set fire to the church of St. Stephen. Solta was never independent and at that time was under the rule of the Split nobility and they grew vines, olives and grain and drove the ships to Split to the Split nobility. Throughout the 16th century, when it came under the rule of the Venetian Republic, the inhabitants of Šolta served for Venice as sailors and the island was always preserved from the devastation of war. With the departure of the Venetians from power, the inhabitants of Šolta bought Šolta from the Split nobility for 25 years and when they paid off the debt Šolta suffered the First World War and Šolta became part of Yugoslavia until 1991 when it became part of the independent Croatian republic. Today, Solta, the sunniest island in Dalmatia, is an island with beautiful beaches and small places where people live and are engaged in tourism, fishing, olive and wine production.
