Description
Medjugorje in the last two decades of the XX and also at the beginning of the XXI. century unique in the world: it is visited by people from all over the globe - white and yellow and black and red; rich and poor; young old. There are no days of the year or seasons without various languages being heard in Medjugorje. Thus, with Medjugorje on June 24, 1981, when Our Lady appeared in Podbrdo, a hamlet in the village of Bijakovići, according to the testimony of the Six Children. From that day on, the visionaries testify, Our Lady appears daily, calling the whole world to peace and conversion. According to the number of pilgrims who visit this place (over 30 million in 30 minutes), it can be said that it is the world's center of prayer, the capital of prayer.
Medjugorje (the name is of Slavic origin: it means a place located among the mountains) with the villages of Bijakovići, Miledna, Šurmanci and Vionica forms a Catholic parish with about 5,000 inhabitants today. It was first mentioned in 1599 as an independent parish. The present parish was founded in 1892 and is dedicated to St. James the Apostle St., protector of pilgrims. The first church was built in 1897, but after the First World War it became dilapidated and unusable due to the shaky ground on which it was located. the parish is pastorally served by the Herzegovinian Franciscans.
