Description

Sinj is located in the heart of Dalmatian Zagora, 30 km from Split, surrounded by mountains Dinara, Svilaja and Kamešnica. In recent years, Sinj has been profiling itself as a tourist destination with its biggest events, the Alka Knights' Game and the celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
But in Sinj there is another interesting detail related to the history of the soccer ball. It is said in the world that the first soccer ball was invented in 1866 in England and that the English invented soccer, but in Gardun near Sinj at the Tilirium archeological site, a monument to a Roman boy holding a soccer ball was found and there is real evidence that football played in Gardun in the 2nd century and was played by Roman soldiers. Today, this monument is located on the front of the house in Sinj in Vrlička Street and today this monument can be seen.
The knightly game of alka originated in history as a symbol of the resistance of the Turkish conquest of the Sinj region, and the alkars were fighters who defended Sinj and the Sinj region from the Turks. Sinj, like Klis, was an important position for the Turks to break into the sea. Alka has been held for 300 years, every year in September.
The Feast of the Assumption is reflected in Sinj every year for the last 300 years, and always on 15.08. After the liberation from the Turks in 1692, the priests settled in Sinj and brought with them the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and since then the Virgin Mary has brought many miraculous appearances in the Sinj region and the Virgin Mary is celebrated as a miracle worker. The festival has been held since 1715, every year on 15.08.
